At Enrych, we are priviledged to meet and support many remarkable and amazing people. Andy is one of them. This is his story…
I am in a wheelchair because I have got cerebral palsy.
When I go out people look at me like I am from Mars or I’ve got two heads just because I cannot walk and talk like everybody else. Some people shout at me and talk to me slowly, but I can understand – I took an A level in maths and I got an A*.
It makes me mad when people talk to the person pushing me, and not me. It’s like saying to me, ‘I’m not talking to you because you won’t understand’, but I do, as you can see by reading this!
So if you see me out and about, try talking to me; I will talk back, you might not understand what I am saying but that doesn’t matter because you will be treating me like you would expect to be treated.
That is all I am asking for. All I want is to able to feel like a human being.
I have been seeing my volunteer Jill from Enrych who comes to help me and this has enabled me to write a children’s book, so Enrych is a brilliant service for people with disabilities.
…Thank you Andy, for sharing your story, and giving such an insight into some of the issues disabled people face every day.

Our Chair of Trustees, Dr Stephen Large writes
I am delighted to share with you our Enrych Annual Report, celebrating 30 years of supporting disabled people. I think it is a remarkable document. To me it is extraordinary how much we have achieved. It is good to be able to talk about so many success stories, and areas of growth, despite the difficult economic climate. I would personally like to thank everyone who has been a part of this success, and especially to those who have shared their stories here.
Enrychers in Pictures – volunteer Catherine
We asked our teams around the country to nominate people in Enrych who had made a real difference to other people’s live. ‘Enrycher’ Awards were presented at our recent national Enrych Day
This month we feature Catherine, who volunteers in Warwickshire.
She was nominated by Co-coordinator Liz who said “Catherine joined in May 2015 as an Enrych volunteer. Since then she has regularly joined our member for coffee, walks, and trips out. They have a number of shared interests, and this has enabled them to develop a lovely friendship. Catherine has since shown an interest in supporting more members and we are currently looking into matching her with another member…or 2!”

Catherine and Dinah’s Enrych Support partnership
Volunteer Catherine and Member Dinah met through Enrych Support in April 2015 after being paired together by Warwickshire Coordinator Liz Williams based upon their mutual interests.
Dinah has Turner Syndrome which affects her hearing and spatial awareness so she contacted Enrych to find a volunteer who she would enjoy spending time with and who could support her in getting out and about.
Catherine and Dinah hit it off straight away. Since their first meeting, they have met fortnightly to go on long walks, shop and meet for coffee. Through their shared love of dogs, they also recently visited the Guide Dogs National Breeding Centre in Leamington.
At their first progress meeting with Coordinator Liz, Dinah said “Meeting Catherine has made such a big difference to my life, it’s nice to have somebody there to support you.” Dinah feels that she can completely be herself when she is with Catherine and Catherine has found volunteering to be extremely rewarding.
Catherine and Dinah have developed a true friendship through Enrych Support and are already planning their Christmas shopping trip together.

Enrych gains ‘Living Wage employer’ accreditation
The Living Wage Foundation is pleased to announce that Enrych has today been accredited as a Living Wage employer.
The Living Wage commitment will see everyone working at Enrych, regardless of whether they are permanent employees or third-party contractors and suppliers; receive a minimum hourly wage of £7.85 – significantly higher than the national minimum wage of £6.50.
The Living Wage is an hourly rate set independently and updated annually. The Living Wage is calculated according to the basic cost of living using the ‘Minimum Income Standard’ for the UK. Decisions about what to include in this standard are set by the public; it is a social consensus about what people need to make ends meet.
Employers choose to pay the Living Wage on a voluntary basis. The Living Wage enjoys cross party support, with public backing from the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition.
Living Wage Foundation Director, Rhys Moore said: “We are delighted to welcome Enrych to the Living Wage movement as an accredited employer.
